1. What Data We Collect

When you use KnowMan, we collect the minimum data necessary to provide and improve our service:

  • Account information: Email address, display name, and authentication credentials.
  • Saved content: Articles, highlights, annotations, and tags you create within KnowMan. This can include article text captured by the browser extension on sites you have granted permission to (see "Browser Extension Content Capture" below).
  • Usage data: Feature usage patterns, search queries (anonymized), and interaction logs to improve the product.
  • Device information: Browser type, operating system, and screen resolution for compatibility.

2. How We Use Your Data

  • To provide, maintain, and improve KnowMan's features, including AI-powered summaries, tagging, and search.
  • To personalize your experience and deliver relevant recommendations.
  • To communicate service updates, security alerts, and support responses.
  • To detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents.

3. Browser Extension Content Capture

The KnowMan browser extension can read the article text of pages you saved but that we could not fetch automatically, such as paywalled or bot-blocked sites.

  • Runs in your browser: This capture uses your existing logged-in session and stays on your device. We never receive your site passwords or login credentials.
  • Per-site permission: Capture only runs on sites you explicitly grant permission to through Chrome's standard prompts. We never request blanket access to all websites and never read your browsing history.
  • Only your saved articles: On a site you have granted, the extension acts only on the specific article URLs you saved to KnowMan. It takes no action and reads nothing on any other page of that site.
  • You are in control: A single toggle, "Auto-capture my saved articles", turns this off entirely at any time. Manual capture remains available.
  • Nothing stored from teasers: If a captured page is just a teaser or sign-in wall with no full content, KnowMan stores nothing from it.

Captured text is stored in your KnowMan library like any other saved article.

4. AI Processing

Our AI features process your saved articles to generate summaries, tags, and search results. This processing happens on our servers. We do not use your personal content to train general-purpose AI models. Your reading data stays yours.

5. Third Parties

We share data only with service providers essential to running KnowMan:

  • Infrastructure: Cloud hosting and database services.
  • Authentication: Identity verification providers.
  • Analytics: Anonymized usage analytics to improve the product.

We never sell your personal data. We never share your saved articles with third parties.

6. Cookies

We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. We use analytics cookies (which you can opt out of) to understand how people use KnowMan. We do not use advertising cookies or trackers.

7. Data Retention

Your saved content is retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove all your personal data and saved content within 30 days. Anonymized analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Export all your saved articles, highlights, and annotations.
  • Correct inaccurate information on your account.
  • Delete your account and all associated data.
  • Object to data processing for specific purposes.

9. Security

We use encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to user data is restricted to authorized personnel on a need-to-know basis. We conduct regular security reviews.
